Former Ambassador Cameron Munter has had a distinguished career in diplomacy and academia. He spent three decades as a U.S. Foreign Service officer and was most recently the president and CEO of the EastWest Institute in New York. He will be joining the LBJ School for a talk on "The New Diplomacy" — how new problems and new players are rapidly changing the nature of global engagement.

Mike Duggan was elected mayor of the city of Detroit on Nov. 5, 2013, and re-elected to a second term on Nov. 7, 2017. Duggan, born in Detroit, has spent his entire career working in the city to solve some of the most complex issues facing Detroiters, including crime, blight and access to jobs. He will join us to discuss "The Story of Detroit" and the challenges and triumphs of the changing city. Lunch provided with RSVP.

In partnership with the Center for the Study of Race and Democracy, Diane McWhorter will discuss her book-in-progress, "Moon of Alabama: From Nazi Germany to Tranquility Base, via the Segregated American South," about the Third Reich missile pioneers who were brought to Huntsville, Alabama after World War II and went on to build the rocket that put the first man on the moon.

The New Deal has become a leading symbol of our own age. This conference will explore the elements of a "Green New Deal" in Europe and America and of the "European New Deal" project of the Democracy in Europe Movement, in light of the history of the original New Deal of Franklin Roosevelt's United States. Over two days experts along with political leaders and activists will discuss the energy transformation necessary to meet the climate crisis and the associated social, labor, financial and economic policies. The conference will be held in the Bass Lecture Hall at the LBJ School of Public Affairs and is free and open to the public.
