Energy Policy Collaborative
Educating the Next Generation of Energy Leaders
Leveraging Texas' status as a global energy hub, the LBJ School of Public Affairs prepares students to shape energy policy, not just understand it. Students tackle challenges in grid modernization, integrating renewable energy and promoting fair access. They develop skills essential for leadership in government, utilities, corporations, startups and think tanks. They benefit from a university ecosystem of over 400 energy researchers across various schools, departments and research centers at UT Austin; all focused on developing groundbreaking solutions across the energy sector.
As energy demand rises due to extreme weather, population growth and emerging technologies like AI and electric vehicles—with peak demand anticipated to double by 2030—our researchers and students are committed to driving innovation at the crucial intersection of policy and industry. They aim to create more sustainable, secure and just energy systems for Texas and beyond.
Shaping the Future of Energy in Texas and Beyond
Robust energy sector creates opportunities for LBJ graduates

#1 in Total Energy Production
Texas leads the nation in overall energy output, including oil, gas, wind and solar.

Clean Energy Momentum
Texas generated more solar energy in 2023 than in all years before 2021 combined and ranks #2 nationally in solar battery storage.

Advancing Wind Power
Texas ranks #1 in wind energy, producing nearly three times more than in 2014 and contributing 28% of U.S. wind-generated electricity.

Energy Innovation Hub
Texas is a national leader in energy innovation, from battery storage and EV adoption to grid modernization and flexible demand solutions.
From roles at Austin Energy and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality to national leadership at the U.S. EPA, Deloitte and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, our alumni are shaping energy and regulatory policy across the public and private sectors

Interdisciplinary Study in Energy and Policy
The LBJ School offers a range of energy-related courses and dual degree options that combine policy expertise with the scientific and technical aspects of modern energy. Students pursuing a Master of Public Affairs or Master of Global Policy Studies often add dual degrees from other UT Austin colleges and schools—such as the Cockrell School of Engineering or the Jackson School of Geosciences—to deepen their expertise and enhance career opportunities.
Dual degree options such as Energy and Earth Resources and Public Affairs and Energy and Earth Resources and Global Policy Studies blend geosciences with policy, equipping students with the interdisciplinary knowledge needed for leadership roles in the energy sector.
