The Public Policy & International Affairs Program (PPIA) welcomes Dr. Peniel E. Joseph as its new Board Chair to serve on its Board of Directors. Dr. Peniel Joseph, Ph.D. is the inaugural Associate Dean for Justice, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion at The University of Texas Austin Lyndon B. Johnson (LBJ) School of Public Affairs.
Dr. Joseph is also the Founding Director of the LBJ School’s Center for the Study of Race and Democracy and a University Distinguished Service Professor. PPIA is delighted to have Dr. Joseph join their work cultivating the next generations of diverse public service and international affairs professionals.
Dr. Joseph is an internationally recognized scholar-activist and author and editor of seven award winning books, most recently The Third Reconstruction: America’s Struggle for Racial Justice in the Twenty-First Century.
He is a frequent national commentator on issues of race, civil rights, and democracy, a fellow of the Society of American Historians and a contributing writer for CNN.com.

"Representation matters and building a truly inclusive democracy requires cultivating students from underrepresented backgrounds and providing the tools, opportunities and resources to foster tomorrow’s transformational leaders.”
Dr. Joseph’s impressive professional and academic background paired with his visionary, inclusive and compassionate approach to leadership makes him an ideal Board Chair for PPIA’s board of directors. Throughout his career, Dr. Joseph has demonstrated commitment, and investment in the community PPIA serves. His deep understanding of the current environment around DEI issues in higher education and public service will undoubtedly strengthen PPIA’s strategic vision and expand our organizational reach.
