First-generation college student and second-year Master of Public Affairs student Julius McIntyre (MPAff '26) saw firsthand how social structures can impact lives. That perspective led him to earn his undergraduate degree in Sociology at The Ohio State University, where he discovered that effective policy has real consequences for people’s lived experiences.

“Studying sociology gave me a lens to see how structures shape individual lives, especially around differences in access and opportunity."

This insight ultimately brought him to the LBJ School of Public Affairs, where he’s combining his passion for improving communities with practical leadership. The LBJ School’s legacy of preparing leaders to tackle complex policy challenges drew Julius to Austin.

“When I visited [the LBJ School], I felt that the school not only offered rigorous academic training but also a community that values bold ideas and action."

His journey hasn’t been without challenges. Initially pursuing pre-med to meet family expectations, Julius eventually shifted to sociology—realizing that following his passions and using his own story was essential to creating impact.

At LBJ, Julius was elected Vice President of the Graduate Public Affairs Council (GPAC), where he hopes to amplify student voices and foster a culture where students feel empowered to embrace their journeys, advocate for their peers, and step confidently into leadership roles.

“I wanted to create space for students to bring their whole selves into this community and to know their voices matter."

This semester, Julius is looking forward to bringing students together at BOO Bash, the GPAC Halloween-themed fall formal. He’s excited to see students connect and celebrate the community they’re building.

After graduation, Julius plans to spend a few years gaining practical experience in policy and social welfare before pursuing a Ph.D. researching social welfare programs. He is particularly passionate about creating and evaluating policies that reduce poverty and expand economic opportunity. Whether working in government, research, or academia, Julius hopes to build systems that support economic mobility and improve the lives of all communities.

Through it all, Julius carries a simple mantra: “Your story is your superpower.” At LBJ, he’s using his story to shape policy, inspire his peers, and lead with authenticity.
