Current Migration Dynamics and Policy Responses at the U.S.-Mexico Border

This class will provide a deep dive on current migration dynamics and policy responses at the U.S.-Mexico border. The topics will include 1. Ongoing enforcement practices for individuals attempting to enter the United States undetected; 2. Policies that target individuals seeking protection at the border, such as metering and the Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP); and 3. The enforcement of public health measures under Title 42, which send migrants and asylum seekers back to Mexico. For each topic, students will learn the policies’ legal basis and structures, their intended effects, and their consequences. The class objective is for students of all backgrounds to be able to analyze current migration dynamics and to leave with a comprehensive and technical understanding of current U.S. policy at the border.
