The University of Texas at Austin invites you to hear U.S. Secretary of State Rex W. Tillerson address U.S. engagement in the Western Hemisphere. This event, which is co-hosted by the Clements Center for National Security and the Robert Strauss Center for International Security and Law, will be held on Thursday, Feb. 1, at 1 p.m. in the Blanton Auditorium. Principal co-sponsors include the LBJ School of Public Affairs and the LBJ Presidential Library. 

Registration is required to attend the event and tickets are limited and non-transferable. Please arrive early to secure your seat, as registration does not guarantee a seat. Doors will open one hour before the event. In the event of an overflow, we will direct late-arriving guests to an adjacent room with a live feed of the event.

Photo identification will be required for entry. Increased security measures will be in effect. Large bags and large electronics will not be permitted. 

Parking is available for a fee in the Brazos Parking Garage.

The University welcomes Distinguished Alumnus Rex Tillerson back to the Forty Acres. Secretary Tillerson earned a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering at the University of Texas at Austin in 1975 before joining Exxon Company, U.S.A. as a production engineer. He rose through the ranks to become president of the corporation and a member of the board of directors in 2004, and served as ExxonMobil's chairman and chief executive officer from 2006 to 2016. On Feb.1, 2017, Rex Tillerson was sworn in as the 69th U.S. Secretary of State.

Secretary Tillerson is a former member of the American Petroleum Institute and the National Petroleum Council, and was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2013. He formerly served as a trustee of the Center for Strategic and International Studies. He was also a member of the Business Roundtable and the Business Council, as well as an honorary trustee of the Business Council for International Understanding, and a member of the Emergency Committee for American Trade. He is a former director of the United Negro College Fund and a former vice-chairman of the Ford’s Theatre Society.

Secretary Tillerson has a longstanding involvement with the Boy Scouts of America, earning its highest rank of Distinguished Eagle Scout in his youth. He is a former member of the Boy Scouts of America’s Executive Committee and served as the National President of the Boy Scouts from 2010 to 2012.
