On Thursday, September 21, the Clements Center for National Security, the Center for European Studies and the Center for Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies will host Alexander Podrabinek, Soviet and Russian human rights activist, for a public talk on “Russian Opposition to Totalitarianism Rule,” where he will examine post-Soviet events that led to Putinism and the Russian war on Ukraine. Alexander Podrabinek is a Soviet and Russian human rights activist, journalist, and writer, author of Punitive Medicine [Карательная медицина], Out of the Yellow Hush [Из желтого безмолвия], Dissidents [Диссидеты], and A Third Life [Третья жизнь]. A former inmate in Soviet prisons and prison camps, he was awarded the Truman-Reagan Medal of Freedom in Washington in 2015. Podrabinek is the author of articles and lectures on human rights, punitive psychiatry, and the process of political transformations in Russia. His books and articles have been published in many languages, and he has given interviews to numerous international media. He wrote the television program “Déjà Vu” on Radio Liberty (2014-2017) and is a regular columnist for Radio Liberty and other publications. He lives in Moscow.
