Please join us on Tuesday, Jan. 29 at 12:15 p.m. for the first 2019 session of the Dean's Distinguished Leaders Series, featuring Lt. Gen. Jeffrey S. Buchanan, commander, U.S. Army North and senior commander, Fort Sam Houston and Camp Bullis.

Lt. Gen. Jeffrey S. Buchanan is the commander of U.S. Army North, the joint force land component command responsible for homeland defense and defense support of civil authorities. He coordinated military relief efforts in Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria as the Pentagon's primary liaison to FEMA and was in charge of U.S. troops on the border with Mexico in 2018. Buchanan served four tours in Iraq and one tour in Afghanistan and has directed operations and held a variety of command and staff positions in airborne, infantry and mountain divisions.

Lt. Gen. Buchanan assumed command of United States Army North (Fifth Army) on Aug. 26, 2016. He was commissioned as a lieutenant in the infantry in May 1982 after graduating from the University of Arizona with a Bachelor of Science in wildlife ecology. He also holds a Master of Arts in leadership development from the United States Military Academy. Lt. Gen. Buchanan's military education includes the Infantry Officer Basic and Advanced Courses at Fort Benning, Georgia; the United States Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas; and a Senior Service College Fellowship in Geneva, Switzerland.

Lt. Gen. Buchanan's duty assignments include command and staff positions within the 82nd Airborne Division, 25th Infantry Division, 101st Airborne Division, and 10th Mountain Division. He also served as a Company and Battalion Tactical Officer at the U.S. Military Academy, director for operations (J3) of Joint Task Force Full Accounting, and the Senior Light Infantry Task Force Trainer at the National Training Center. 

In 2003 and 2004, Lt. Gen. Buchanan was the director of operations (C3), Coalition Military Assistance Training Team. Between 2004 and 2006, he commanded the 2nd Brigade, 75th Division (TSB) and deployed a second time to Iraq to serve as an adviser to the Iraqi Special Police Commando Division. Upon his return, he served as director of operations for U.S. Army North (Fifth Army) at Fort Sam Houston, Texas until November of 2007. From 2007 through 2009, he served as deputy commanding general for the 10th Mountain Division including a deployment to Iraq as the Multi-National Division-South. Following an assignment as the G-3/5/7 for the United States Army Reserve Command, he returned to Iraq for his fourth tour there as the director of strategic effects (J9), U.S. Forces Iraq, from July 2010 to December 2011.

He served as the deputy commanding general, I Corps from 2012 to 2013, and then commanded the U.S. Army Military District of Washington/Joint Force Headquarters-National Capitol Region from 2013 to 2015. He served as the Resolute Support DCOS-Operations/Deputy Commander (Operations) for US Forces-Afghanistan in 2015 and 2016. He and his wife Laura have three adult children (all married) and three grandchildren.
