On Thursday, Oct. 1, 2020, the Strauss and Clements Centers welcome back Dr. Julie Schafer for a second conversation on the tough decisions governments face in responding to pandemics. Building upon the original event earlier this year in February, Professor Michele Malvesti, Ph.D., Senior National Security Fellow at the Strauss and Clements Center, will sit down with Dr. Schafer to review the current state of the COVID-19 response; delineate events and effects that pandemic plans did and did not anticipate; evaluate where the United States and other countries have been successful and where we have fallen short; and discuss forward pathways to a post-COVID normal.

Biography
Julie Schafer, Ph.D., MPH, is the chief technology officer for Flu Lab, seeking to stretch the boundaries of how technology is used toward defeating influenza. Schafer has held a number of leadership positions in the U.S. government, including chief of staff, and later director of strategy, for the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). She served in the White House National Security Council and has led complex influenza vaccine, therapeutic and diagnostic advanced development programs.
