A letter from the dean upon Dr. Larry Lynn's passing

Colleagues,

I am sorry to share the sad news that former faculty member Laurence E. Lynn Jr. passed away early in the new year. Dr. Larry Lynn served as a research professor at the LBJ School from 2008 to 2014. He taught courses in policy implementation, governance, and public management in both domestic and global policy domains.

Sometimes called the “godfather of public management,” Dr. Lynn published and edited cornerstone books of the field. He held many policy-making positions in the federal government—including the National Security Council, the Department of the Interior, and the Department of Health, Education and Welfare—and other public and nonprofit agencies. Larry followed his decade of public service with three decades in academic roles. After teaching in the Harvard Kennedy School, Stanford’s Business School, and Texas A&M’s Bush School, among others, Larry closed his academic career with six years at the LBJ School. While I was not fortunate enough to meet Larry, I enjoyed learning about him in his own words.

If you would like to share a remembrance of Larry, please feel welcome to post a comment on this page.

Warm regards,

JR DeShazo

Dean, LBJ School
