MIAMI – OCTOBER 25, 2022 – Today, Dr. Sergio García-Ríos Director of Polling and Data at Univision Noticias and associate director of research at the Center for the Study of Race and Democracy at the LBJ School, published his latest electoral midterm voter polls in Texas and Nevada.

The polls analyzed multiple issues such as state, local and gubernatorial races, policy issues like border security, abortion, gun violence, climate change, student debt and inflation.

“Our polls highlight the diverse opinions and decisions within the Latino community across the U.S. and the complexity of the statewide voter sentiment,” said García-Ríos. "These polls have been conducted with academic and cultural competence. The Texas poll included robust oversamples of Black and Latino voters, highlighting the diverse -and often divergent- policy concerns and preferences of the various voting groups in Texas.  These differences enrich our state but also present areas of opportunity for politicians and policymakers.”

Overseen by García-Ríos, the surveys were conducted by BSP Research and Shaw & Associates October 11-18, 2022. The surveys include a representative sample of all registered voters in Texas (n = 1400) and Nevada (n = 1000). In Texas, the poll includes an oversample of Latino (n =500) and Black (n= 400) voters. Significant findings from the research are outlined below.

Texas

  • Inflation and cost of living is the main concern among registered voters in Texas and could be decisive factor when voting.
  • Mass shootings and gun safety are major concerns for Black and Latino voters in Texas but not for other voters.
  • Abortion rights are not among the top five concerns of registered voters in Texas. But the majority of Texas voters support passing a law to guarantee access to abortion across all groups.
  • Despite the support of Latinos and Black voters, Beto O'Rourke is six points behind Greg Abbot.
  • Mobilization will be critical in the race for governor. Abbott leads among the two-thirds of those who say they are "certain to cast a ballot"; however, O'Rourke leads among those that are less certain.

Nevada

  • The Latino vote will be critical in a close election for the Senate and Governor.
  • Cortez Masto and Laxalt in a statistical tie. Latinos favor Cortez Masto and will play a key role in determining the winner, a race that will affect the balance of power.
  • Latino support for Steve Sisolak will be vital in defining the race for governor of Nevada, currently on a statistical tie.
  • The cost of living is the biggest concern of registered voters in Nevada and could tip the balance in favor of the Republicans.
  • The right to abortion is a significant concern for Nevada voters but far from economic issues. Democrats hold an advantage when it comes to trust in abortion rights.
  •  31% of registered voters in Nevada believe that electoral fraud exists and see it as a severe problem.

Complete results of the polls are available at the Center for the Study of Race and Democracy. The poll findings are the result of a research partnership among Univision Noticias , BSP Research, Shaw & Associates and the LBJ School’s Center for the Study of Race and Democracy at The University of Texas.

In addition, Univision Noticias will hold another press event on Tuesday, November 1, at 2 p.m. EST to release the poll results from Arizona and Florida. The press event will be moderated by Jorge Ramos, anchor on “Noticiero Univision” and host of “Al Punto Con Jorge Ramos” and ViX’s “Algo Personal Con Jorge Ramos.” Interested press and attendees can RSVP here.
