The Bipartisan Policy Center today announced that Ruth Wasem, professor of public policy practice at the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs at The University of Texas at Austin, is joining the organization as a fellow with the Immigration Project. As a fellow, Wasem will be working alongside BPC's immigration experts providing meaningful analysis and insights into current immigration issues and challenges and creating pragmatic, bipartisan immigration policy recommendations.

Wasem has over 25 years of experience studying immigration policy and was a longtime immigration policy specialist at the United States Library of Congress's Congressional Research Service, serving members of Congress from both parties in providing expert insights and research on immigration issues and legislation during some of the most impactful debates, including the 1996 Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act, the Homeland Security Act of 2002 and comprehensive immigration reform debates during the terms of presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama. In addition to her research background, Wasem has experience testifying before Congress on asylum policy, legal immigration trends, human rights, and the push-pull forces on unauthorized migration.

"We are thrilled to have Ruth join our growing immigration team," said Theresa Cardinal Brown, BPC's director of immigration and cross-border policy. "Her pragmatic and objective approach to studying U.S. and global migration trends, and her first-hand experience with key immigration debates of the last decades will be invaluable to us as we continue to develop new recommendations to address the nation’s most pressing immigration issues."

"I'm excited for this new opportunity to work with the experts at BPC, who don't shy away from the tough challenges facing our country and who continue to seek bipartisan solutions. It's time our country takes a hard look at the current immigration system, and I'm looking forward to playing my part here at BPC." —LBJ Professor Ruth Wasem

Wasem is currently completing a book about the legislative drive to end race- and nationality-based immigration. Her commentary can be found in prominent news outlets like the Wall Street Journal, The Atlantic, NPR's "All Things Considered" and The Hill.
