Contemporary African Policy Issues
P A 388K (60219) Fall 2024
This course begins with a multidimensional survey of Africa’s five regions as defined by the African Union (first five classes). After considering Africa’s continental and selected regional organizations (class 6), we will examine African approaches to five policy areas: human security, economic and social development, humanitarian response, migration, and international relations (classes 7-11). The next two classes will focus on external partners, both multilateral and bilateral (including the United States). The final class will review key facts and dynamics of the course. The course’s three learning objectives are to acquire knowledge of contemporary Africa, to develop a nuanced understanding of key policy dynamics, and to enhance briefing and drafting skills. Writing assignments use the format of official memoranda, not academic research papers. The course is conducted as a mix of lectures and class discussion, guest speakers, and various media. The reading load is geared toward the LBJ School average. Readings and other media are a mix of African and external sources.
