This course examines the acquisition, characteristics, and significance of private giving in relation to nonprofit organizations. This includes a consideration of different types of philanthropic funders (e.g., individual, corporate, foundation, giving circles), philanthropy and social capital, legal frameworks, the role of board and staff, fundraising mechanisms (e.g., grantwriting, crowdsourcing), and the relationship between philanthropy and other forms of support (e.g. earned income, government subsidy). Attention will be given to the often different perspectives of donors, board members, and managers and their consequences. Through case studies and hands on exercises, including grantwriting and researching potential funding sources, students will translate broad course themes into practical applications.
