Please join us on Monday, Nov. 19 at 5:15 p.m. for a special session of the Dean’s Distinguished Leaders Series, featuring the Honorable George J. Mitchell, known for his long career as a bipartisan leader, legislator, and peacemaker. He represented Maine in the United States Senate from 1980 to 1995, serving as Senate majority leader from 1989 to 1995. He was a member of the Senate’s Finance, Veterans Affairs and Environment and Public Works Committees, and his Senate accomplishments include leading the 1990 reauthorization of the Clean Air Act; writing the first national oil spill prevention and cleanup law; leading the passage of the nation’s first child care bill; writing the low-income housing tax credit program; and helping to pass the Americans with Disabilities Act. Mitchell was a leader in opening markets to trade and led the Senate to ratify the North American Free Trade Agreement and create of the World Trade Organization.

Mitchell served as the Independent Chairman of the Northern Ireland Peace Talks from 1996 to 2000, which culminated in the historic Good Friday Agreement, ending decades of conflict. Mitchell served as President Barack Obama’s U.S. Special Envoy for Middle East Peace from 2009 to 2011 and is a co-founder of the Bipartisan Policy Center, a think tank in Washington, DC dedicated to promoting aisle-crossing solutions to the issues facing this country.

He is the author of five books, including a memoir, The Negotiator: Reflections on an American Life (2015) and A Path To Peace (2016).
