The Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs at The University of Texas at Austin launched an exciting academic year with its annual State of the College address by Dean JR DeShazo on Thursday, Sept. 26.

DeShazo highlighted a successful year for the LBJ School, which featured over 300 political speakers across more than 50 events and symposiums, the addition of 13 faculty members, and the creation of The Patman Center for Civic and Political Engagement. These are just a few examples of the school's growing momentum during the 2023-24 academic year.

Looking ahead to 2024-25, DeShazo shared his vision, which includes introducing two new degree programs and establishing two centers to enhance policy support and resources for students and the communities they serve.

Bachelor of Public Affairs: The LBJ School announced its first-ever undergraduate program, the Bachelor of Public Affairs. Applications are now open for the inaugural class, beginning in Fall 2025.

Master of National Security: National security leadership is essential for promoting global peace, security, democracy and human rights. In collaboration with national security leaders and LBJ Professors Paul Pope and Michael Dennis, the school will soon launch the only residential national security program in Texas—the new Master of National Security.

Extreme Weather Adaptation Lab: Policymakers nationwide are grappling with the escalating impacts of extreme heat, drought, flooding and severe storms. In recent decades, Texas has seen a significant rise in billion-dollar weather disasters. The school will launch the Extreme Weather Adaptation Lab to help policy leaders enhance their communities' resilience and adaptation to these challenges.

Center for Municipal Capital Markets: Addressing the growing demand for specialized training in public finance, the school will also establish the Center for Municipal Capital Markets—the only university-based center in the country focused exclusively on capital market issues within public finance.

Following the State of the College address, the LBJ School celebrated the two recipients of the Outstanding Alumni Awards. Wayne Roberts received the Distinguished Public Service Award, while Sarah Garza was honored with the LBJ Rising Leader Award.

The evening concluded with a festive "Party on the Plaza," where attendees enjoyed food and celebrated the promising year ahead. The event was a testament to the tremendous impact of the LBJ School and its vibrant community.
