China is commemorating four decades since it turned away from Mao Zedong Thought, and toward the blend of market and socialist policies initiated in 1978 by Deng Xiaoping collectively known as Reform and Opening Up. Over that time, much has changed. China has gone from mostly rural to mostly urban, from poor to middle-income, and from militarily weak to powerful.
At this conference, senior scholars will discuss and reflect on the domestic and international policy legacies of China’s economic, political and military development from the 1970s until today. Speakers will also examine what, if any, lessons policymakers in Beijing and other countries can take from China’s development experience. This conference is sponsored by the Strauss Center and The Center for East Asian Studies.
