On Wednesday, March 25, 2020 the Strauss Center will welcome Dr. Ping Chen, research fellow of China Institute at Fudan University in Shanghai and retired professor of National School of Development at Peking University in Beijing, China, to give a talk on the main features and historical path of China as a development state. Chen will also discuss China's rise and the resulting impact on international order and security law. This talk will be part of the Strauss Center’s Brumley Speaker Series.
Dr. Ping Chen received a B.S. in physics from the University of Science & Technology of China in 1968, and a Ph.D. in physics from The University of Texas at Austin in 1987. His Ph.D. supervisor was Ilya Prigogine (Nobel laureate in chemistry) and Walt W. Rostow (former national security adviser to U.S. President Lyndon Johnson). He is a founding director of the World Economics Association (WEA) and a foreign member of the Center for Capitalism & Society at Columbia University in New York.
Ping Chen’s primary research interests are business cycles, economic complexity, and chaos. His major works including Economic Complexity and Equilibrium Illusion: Essays on Market Instability and Macro Vitality, Routledge, London (2010) and theory of metabolic growth (2014). He participated in China’s reform policy studies since 1978. He served as an expert adviser to Shanghai City, China Development Bank, Ministry of Labor and Social Security. Dr. Chen has lectured in leading universities and international organizations around the world.
