NONPROFIT GOVERNANCE

Course description:

Through case studies, readings, guest speakers, and discussion, this class will investigate the governance and leadership functions of nonprofit boards of directors. Attention will be given to the legal responsibilities of trustees, meeting management, the function of bylaws, issues in board composition and development, and the competencies of highly functioning boards. Best practices in volunteer management will receive considerable attention as well.  . This course offers students an opportunity to explore the challenges inherent in board participation, including public/governmental commissions and committees, as well as critical issues in working with the community as volunteers and engaged partners. Students will be expected to attend a nonprofit board meeting and to examine effective volunteer engagement.
