
Adjunct Professor, practitioner of Obstetrics and Gynecology
Dr. Margaret Thompson completed medical school and residency at Duke University Medical Center. Since that time, she has been engaged in the private practice of Obstetrics and Gynecology in Austin, Texas. During her medical career, she has served on many committees and held numerous positions including President of the Austin OB-GYN Society, Chairman of the Medical Affiliate Board of Planned Parenthood, Chief of OB-GYN and Member of the Medical Ethics Committee of Seton Hospital, Executive Board Member of the Texas Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and Member of the Texas Medical Association Committee on Maternal Health. She was named Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year for the development of the Renaissance Women’s Center, a women’s specialty hospital in Austin. She was also instrumental in the passage of legislation in Texas banning gender discrimination in health care reimbursement.
Dr. Thompson recently received a J.D. from the University of Texas and Master’s Degree from the LBJ School of Public Affairs at U.T. After thirty years and 15,000 babies, she is embarking on a second career in health law and policy. Her particular interests are reproductive law and policy, medical and professional ethics, gender and racial disparities in health care, prevention of medical errors, the delivery system for health care, the interface of medicine, law, and politics, and multi-disciplinary higher education.
