What I do
The Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS) provides retirement annuities and healthcare benefits to more than 2 million public and higher education employees, as well as manages a $210+ billion pension trust fund with investments all over the world. As the leader of this organization, I am inspired and guided by our members every day. I am humbled to help so many Texans plan for their retirement, no matter where they are in their public education career.
What inspired my passion for public service
I come from a modest background and would not be in the position I’m in today without a myriad of public service programs. I also never would have gone to college without the support of several amazing public school teachers who gave me opportunities for growth and encouraged me to pursue higher education. To be in a position now to give back to educators and provide them with a secure retirement is extremely important and meaningful to me.
What I love most about my job
Beyond giving back to teachers, the uniqueness of TRS and our mission is a source of constant motivation. In addition to providing important government services through our pension and healthcare programs, we also operate a world-class investment division that rivals and surpasses anything that you might find in the private sector. I am also motivated by the employees of TRS, who give their best every day and care about our mission. In fact, in 2024, TRS was not only recognized as a Top Workplace, but also received a special Meaningfulness Award based on our employees’ feedback.
How the LBJ School of Public Affairs prepared me
When I came to the LBJ School straight out of college, my intention was to go to Washington D.C. or pursue a career in foreign service upon graduation. However, in my second semester at LBJ, I took a public financial management class that was taught by the former director of the Texas Legislative Budget Board. He opened my eyes to the possibilities of a career in state government and ultimately led me to my first job at his former agency. The rest is history.
My advice for others considering a role in public service
Find your passion and cultivate it. Be true to yourself and never compromise your principles for political expediency or ease. Lead by example. Embrace differences and search for common ground. And most importantly, be accountable.
