NONPROFIT BOARD GOVERNANCE VOLUNTEERISM AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Through an analysis of case studies,  current research, an exploration of required readings, presentations lead by guest speakers, and student generated discussions and presentations, the class will investigate the governance and leadership functions of nonprofit boards of directors and their role as organizational volunteers. Attention will be given to the legal responsibilities of trustees, meeting management, the function of bylaws, issues in board composition and development, and best practices in board and volunteer management. A rich assortment of case studies will be used to bring critical issues to life and to pose to the student the type of challenges inherent in board participation. In addition, we will explore ongoing research on the impact of volunteers and community participation for its impact on the effectiveness of nonprofit organizations.

 

TEACHING METHODS 

This class uses a seminar format. This course is designed to provide you with a meaningful learning environment through use of multiple methods of instruction (e.g. discussion, lecture, guest lecturers, and group exercises); experiential learning (e.g. active learning) will be emphasized. You are expected to complete assigned readings prior to each class period. You are expected to participate in classClass attendance and participation is required and essential for successful completion of this course. 

This course is designed to include a variety of teaching and learning methodologies to achieve the course objectives.  These methods intentionally draw on diverse pedagogical approaches to be inclusive of a variety of learning styles; activities include readings, writings, discussions, lectures, videos, in-class group activities, and self-reflection. As this is a seminar course, much of the learning will take place in class discussions. This course will highlight diverse perspectives of thought and encourages students to engage in new ways of thinking that may be represented by speakers, the professor, and classmates from diverse backgrounds.

This course will use an electronic Canvas site. Canvas will be used for communication between students, the instructor, and the TA. Some materials, grades, and attendance will also be posted online.
