Public sector and non-profit employees who wish to communicate effectively with policymakers, stakeholders, board members, and executive leadership.

Course Description:

A recent survey of Texas government senior managers and executives conducted by the LBJ School Office of Professional Development found that the resounding answer to the question “What skill do members of your agency/team most need to strengthen?” was…WRITING. The need for strong, flexible writing abilities exists at all levels of an organization. This program has been specifically designed to address this skill gap.

In the first half of the session, participants will hone their editing skills and work on recognizing common errors in public policy writing. Exercises in concision, active voice, and direct syntax will allow participants to practice writing clear, effective text. In the second half of the session, participants will evaluate memos, emails, and reports for structure and style. Participants will use recommended elements of strong documents to create and review drafts in class.

Course Objectives:

At the conclusion of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Recognize wordiness and mistakes in grammar, punctuation, and syntax;
  • Edit for concision and active voice;
  • Use strategies to create clear, succinct text;
  • Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of common policy documents like memos and reports; and,
  • Apply the elements of good writing to drafts of policy documents.

This class is approved for 16 CPE hours by the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy (TSBPA).
