Semester-at-a-Glance Checklist

While the checklist is not an all-inclusive, exhaustive list of requirements, it provides students with a general outline for moving through the program semester by semester, starting at the time of admission and ending post-graduation. Please consult your MPAff or MGPS Student Handbooks for detailed information about your program degree requirements, as well as important student policies, procedures, and websites.

Before Enrolling

Semester I (Fall) 

  • Attend the LBJ School’s New Student Orientation program (date and time TBA on the LBJ School Summer Transition Canvas site).

  • Update your contact information online to note any changes to your email address, physical address or phone number; notify the Office of Student and Alumni Affairs of any change to your contact information.

  • Review your MPAff or MGPS Student Handbook to learn about your degree requirements, as well as important student policies, procedures and websites.

  • Submit core course waiver requests (where applicable) as soon as possible—no later than the last class day of your first semester.

  • Register for classes (MPAff students should register for as many core courses as possible in order to satisfy MPAff internship course prerequisites).

  • (MPAff ONLY) Obtain Graduate Adviser consent to enroll in any non-LBJ School classes that are not included on the MPAff pre-approved non-LBJ School elective list (see Course Schedules page).

  • (Non-TX residents working 20+ hr weekly RA/TA/AI positions ONLY) Apply for the "in-state tuition benefit by reason of employment" online.

  • Note that the fourth class day of the fall semester is the last day to add or drop a class online; the 12th class day of the semester is the last day to add or drop a class through the department in which the class is offered and also the last day to drop a course for a refund.

  • Pay tuition bill and/or confirm attendance to classes by the payment deadline.

  • Purchase student health insurance (optional for US citizens).

  • Join a student organization (optional).

  • Submit required travel paperwork to the Coordinator for Academic Programs.

  • Attend the LBJ School Writing Center sessions on the policy memo and plagiarism/ethical research if you haven't already attended these sessions during Camp LBJ.

  • Update your resume; consult with LBJ School Career Services for resume review and feedback.

  • Develop a professional network including faculty, alumni, and visiting employers.

  • Start researching internship placement options in the LBJ School’s Career Connections database and elsewhere.

  • Attend your respective Graduate Adviser’s registration advising session, consult course schedule, and review registration instructions in preparation for Semester II (spring) registration period.

  • Consult your Registration Information Sheet (RIS) to learn about when you register and any (financial or other) registration bars posted to your student record.

  • Register for Semester II (spring) classes (MPAff students- register for remaining core classes needed to satisfy MPAff internship course prerequisites).

  • (MGPS only) Submit updated MGPS Program of Work to MGPS Graduate Adviser.

  • Note that the last class day of the fall semester is the deadline to Q-drop a current semester course (exception: the Q-drop deadline for one credit hour short courses is the date of the last class meeting).

​Semester II (Spring) 

  • (Non-TX residents working 20+ hr weekly RA/TA/AI positions ONLY) Apply for the "in-state tuition benefit by reason of employment" online.

  • Note that the fourth class day of the fall semester is the last day to add or drop a class online; the 12th class day of the semester is the last day to add or drop a class through the department in which the class is offered and also the last day to drop a course for a refund.

  • Pay tuition bill and/or confirm attendance to classes by the payment deadline.

  • Attend employer information sessions, and resume and interview workshops.

  • Secure an LBJ School internship placement; determine whether to complete internship for admin or academic credit; submit an Internship Approval Request Form to obtain Graduate Adviser approval prior to starting your internship. Refer to the internship information and instructions in your MPAff or MGPS Student Handbook to learn about your options for completing the internship requirement.

  • Obtain travel clearance from UT’s International Office and the Coordinator for Academic Programs if travelling to an international internship placement.

  • Apply for an LBJ School internship fellowship, if eligible.

  • Attend Graduate Adviser’s registration advising session, consult course schedule, and review registration instructions in preparation for Semester III (fall) registration period (NOTE: registration in the intervening summer semester is also an option).

  • Consult your Registration Information Sheet (RIS) to learn about when you register and any (financial or other) registration bars posted to your student record.

  • Register for Semester III (fall) classes (registration in the intervening summer semester is optional).

  • (MGPS only) Submit updated MGPS Program of Work to MGPS Graduate Adviser.

  • Note that the last class day of the spring semester is the deadline to Q-drop a current semester course (exception: the Q-drop deadline for one credit hour short courses is the date of the last class meeting).

​Intervening (Summer) Semester

  • Complete the LBJ School internship requirement by submitting an Internship Approval Request Form to your Graduate Adviser for approval and completing the required 400 hours in your internship placement.

  • Students who are registered for summer classes: note that the second class day of the summer semester is the last day to add or drop a class online; the fourth class day of the semester is the last day to add or drop a class through the department in which the class is offered and also the last day to drop a course for a refund.

  • (MPAff only) Submit student and agency internship evaluations by last class day of summer, upon completion of the required 400 hours for your internship.

  • If interning in Washington, DC, consider participating in LBJ School DC Summer Program.

Semester III (Fall)

  • Note that the fourth class day of the fall semester is the last day to add or drop a class online; the 12th class day of the semester is the last day to add or drop a class through the department in which the class is offered and also the last day to drop a course for a refund.

  • Pay tuition bill and/or confirm attendance to classes by the payment deadline.

  • (Non-TX residents working 20+ hr weekly RA/TA/AI positions ONLY) apply for the in state tuition benefit by reason of employment online.

  • Consult Career Services to update your resume (to include internship and other relevant experience in preparation for your job search).

  • Attend employer information sessions, and resume and interview workshops.

  • Start researching job opportunities in the LBJ School’s Career Connections database, on LinkedIn (search for LBJ Career Resources), and elsewhere.

  • If completing a Professional Report (PR) in your final year, formulate your PR topic, line up your faculty readers, submit a PR Committee Selection and Registration Approval Form to the Graduate Program Coordinator in SRH 3.104, and attend the LBJ School Writing Center’s PR Information Session (mandatory) and PR Design Seminars (optional).

  • Attend Graduate Adviser’s registration advising session, consult course schedule, and review registration instructions in preparation for Semester IV (spring) registration period.

  • Consult your Registration Information Sheet (RIS) to learn about when you register and any (financial or other) registration bars posted to your student record.

  • Register for Semester IV (spring) classes.

  • (MGPS only) Submit updated MGPS Program of Work to MGPS Graduate Adviser.

  • Note that the last class day of the fall semester is the deadline to Q-drop a current semester course (exception: the Q-drop deadline for one credit hour short courses is the date of the last class meeting) and to resolve a grade of incomplete for a class taken in the prior semester.

Semester IV (Spring)

  • Note that the fourth class day of the spring semester is the last day to add or drop a class online; the 12th class day of the semester is the last day to add or drop a class through the department in which the class is offered and also the last day to drop a course for a refund.

  • Pay tuition bill and/or confirm attendance to classes by the payment deadline.

  • (Non-TX residents working 20+ hr weekly RA/TA/AI positions ONLY) apply for the in state tuition benefit by reason of employment online.

  • If completing a Professional Report (PR), meet internal LBJ School deadlines (mandatory) and attend the LBJ School Writing Center’s PR Design Seminars (optional).

  • Apply to graduate by the published deadline.

  • (MPAff only) If completing an MPAff Specialization, submit your Specialization Declaration form to the Graduate Program Coordinator in SRH 3.104.

  • Complete all spring/current semester course work on time (incomplete course grades will jeopardize your eligibility for graduation).

  • Note that the last class day of the spring semester is the deadline to Q-drop a current semester course (exception: the Q-drop deadline for one credit hour short courses is the date of the last class meeting); to resolve a grade of incomplete for a class taken in the prior semester.

  • If completing a Professional Report (PR), upload the pdf of your PR to the Texas Digital Library and submit final deliverables (title page, signature page with original signatures, abstract, and "Statement on Research with Human Participants") to the Office of Graduate Studies by 5 pm on the last class day.

  • Update your contact information online and clear any financial bars to ensure receipt of your diploma.

  • Clean out your LBJ School student mailbox.

  • Attend LBJ School annual Commencement Ceremony (optional).

After Graduation

  • Complete the LBJ School Alumni employment survey.

  • Update your personal profile in the LBJ School’s Alumni Directory.

  • Add the LBJ School Alumni Affairs e-mail address to your contacts.
