In commemoration of Barbara Jordan Freedom Week, a special interactive timeline and gallery showcasing Barbara Jordan’s life will be on display in the rotunda of the Texas State Capitol Building. The week of Feb. 20-26 was established as Barbara Jordan Freedom Week by the 2011 Texas Senate.

 Washington, DC, February 15, 2012 –– The Aspen Institute today announced that Dr. Christopher King, Senior Research Scientist, Lecturer and Director of the Ray Marshall Center for the Study of Human Resources at The University of Texas at Austin’s Lyndon Baines Johnson School of Public Affairs, will be in the inaugural class of its Ascend Fellowship program, one of a select group of 20 leaders from across the country who are pioneering two-generation approaches to move families beyond poverty

To commemorate the 76th anniversary of Barbara Jordan’s birth, the LBJ School of Public Affairs at The University of Texas at Austin will host the 16th Annual Barbara Jordan National Forum, a week of student-led activities taking place Feb. 21 through Feb. 24. The week will be kicked off on Feb. 21 with a luncheon and keynote address by LBJ School Alumna Stacey Abrams (1998), Georgia State Representative.

Two LBJ School alumnae took part in the climate change negotiations in Durban, South Africa in November and December of 2011. The Durban Climate Change Conference was held by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

In commemoration of the 100th anniversary of Lady Bird Johnson's birth, the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs will host a conference in Spring 2013 that will focus on Mrs. Johnson's environmental legacy. This event will be one of many planned events honoring the Lady Bird Johnson Centennial celebration which will take place from the Fall of 2011 through the Summer of 2013.

The Barbara Jordan Freedom Foundation, in collaboration with the Center for Health and Social Policy (CHASP) at the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs at The University of Texas at Austin, will present a symposium focused on the issues of school discipline and the juvenile justice system on Monday, February 20, from 1:00 – 5:00 pm. The event, which takes place the week of Barbara Jordan’s birthday, is also co-sponsored by the William Wayne Justice Center at the University of Texas School of Law.

The Energy Institute at The University of Texas at Austin renewed its ongoing, weekly lecture series on energy-related issues with a presentation from former Austin Energy General Manager Roger Duncan. Varun Rai, assistant professor at the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs and a CIEEP research fellow, is coordinating the symposium and will serve as host for the series.
