Tara Smith, a Research Associate at the LBJ School’s Ray Marshall Center for the Study of Human Resources, testified before the House Ways and Means Committee’s Subcommittee on Human Resources on July 17. Smith was called before the subcommittee to provide members with information regarding evaluation efforts to help families support their children and escape poverty. She summarized the Center’s ongoing efforts to evaluate two sector-based training programs with a unique two-generation focus.

Since 1992, The University of Texas at Austin has welcomed between five and eleven Army War College Fellows each year through a partnership with the Army War College. The fellows—Army officers who have succeeded operationally and are being prepared to take on high-level strategic positions in the military—spend their year at the university taking master’s level classes in several departments including the LBJ School of Public Affairs.

LBJ School Professor Jacqueline Angel is a winner of the 2013 Outstanding Publication Award from the American Sociological Association (ASA) section on Aging and the Life course for her work as editor of the Handbook of the Sociology of Aging.

Professor James Galbraith will be among the 2014 recipients of the Leontief Prize for Advancing the Frontiers of Economic Thought. The award is given out by the Global Development and Environment (GDAE) Institute at Tufts University and recognizes the contributions researchers make to the study of poverty, inequality and well-being.

The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, one of the leading educational foundations in the country, has selected The University of Texas at Austin as a distinguished institution for training the next generation of history teachers. Twenty-five primary and secondary education teachers from schools throughout the country (including three in Texas) will participate in a weeklong seminar on the UT Austin campus, where they will work closely with faculty members to improve the quality of history education in their schools and communities. LBJ School Professor Jeremi Suri will lead the seminar.

The 2013 edition of the Thinkers and Doers Summer Internship Blog has launched with 6 student bloggers focusing on policy issues for a variety of governmental, non-governmental and non-profit organizations around the world and close to home. From agriculture, food security and nutrition, to juvenile justice issues in Texas, entrepreneurial development, education and poverty, these student interns will share their on-going stories as they develop the skills to become change agents in the world of public affairs. We invite you to meet our bloggers and learn about their various policy interests and then follow along as they describe their fieldwork.

In a day of celebration, family and friends were invited to watch a new generation of game changers and policy makers receive their graduate degrees at the 2013 LBJ School Commencement ceremony.

Five graduating Master of Public Affairs students traveled to Philadelphia in March to compete against teams from eight other policy schools in the Fels Institute of Government’s second annual Public Policy Challenge. Their proposal was to develop a mobile phone app called Route360, which displayed real-time information on all Austin transportation alternatives from biking to driving to taking the bus or light rail.

The LBJ School of Public Affairs will admit the first class of students for its new Executive Master in Public Leadership (EMPL) beginning in May 2014. This is the school’s first full degree program in executive education and the only program of its kind in Texas. Visit the EMPL website.
