On Saturday, May 21, the LBJ School was proud to honor its 51st class of graduates — an extraordinary group of people who pursued their passion for public service and persevered through a pandemic that presented challenges no other class had faced. We are delighted to send this accomplished cohort out into the world as policy professionals.

In addition to remarks from Dean JR DeShazo, who celebrated his first graduation leading the LBJ School, the ceremony focused heavily on the role of public service and public policy, and how they shape society.

It also brought the premiere of this video highlighting the stories of Nina Nomura Nibling (MGPS '22), Derreck DaSilva (MPAff '22) and Alyssa Goessler (MGPS/Middle Eastern Studies '22) and their experiences at LBJ.

Chang talked about the ways her cohort came together and supported one another: "I believe that the 51st class of the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs is one of the most caring, brilliant, talented, and dedicated group of people I have ever met. ... We ventured into the unknown and chose to pursue knowledge, truth and democracy."

Graduation Speaker Ambassador Vilma Martínez

Martínez, the first woman to represent the United States as ambassador to Argentina (2009–13), urged the class to consider their role in deciding what America is — what it represents and what is necessary to protect its purpose and its foundation.
