Important Dates

Round 1 Application Deadline for Fall 2017 Admission: December 15, 2016

Priority deadline for admission fellowship consideration

Decision Notification for Round 1: February 15, 2017

Round 2 Application Deadline for Fall 2017 Admission: April 1, 2017

Applications will be reviewed as they are received after the Round 1 deadline until April 1, 2017

Decision Notification for Round 2:  Rolling depending on application date, but all decisions will be made by April 15, 2017

Spring or summer admission is not available for the MGPS program, and all MGPS students must enroll as full-time students.

Application Requirements

  2. Uploaded copies of your official transcript(s)
  3. Test scores
  4. Three letters of recommendation

*Current and former UT Austin graduate students should not complete the ApplyTexas application. You should submit the Change of Major form. For more details on this process, please visit http://www.utexas.edu/ogs/admissions/howtocom.html. This does not apply to current and former UT Austin undergraduate students, who should submit the ApplyTexas application.

Dual degree applicants

If you are applying to a dual degree program, please select the correct dual degree code on the ApplyTexas application. You should not submit two separate ApplyTexas applications for each program. Each department reviews dual degree applications independently. You must complete all of the requirements set by each department, including separate deadlines, test requirements, etc. If you are only admitted to one program, you will have the option to switch to the single degree program after the review process ends.

Letters of Recommendation

  • Three letters of recommendation are required as part of your application. We prefer one letter from a professional source, one from an academic source, and the third can be from either source.
  • Please review the departmental requirements section on http://www.utexas.edu/ogs/admissions/howtous.html for more information about electronic submission of letters of recommendation.

Resume

  • After submitting your ApplyTexas application, you will receive access to your MyStatus page. You can upload your resume directly onto your MyStatus page once you receive access. For more information on how to check your status, please visit http://www.utexas.edu/ogs/admissions/status.html.
  • Please note that it will take at least 1-2 business days for you to receive access to your MyStatus page after submitting your ApplyTexas application.

Statement of Purpose

  • After submitting your ApplyTexas application, you will receive access to your MyStatus page. You can upload your Statement of Purpose directly onto your MyStatus page once you receive access. For more information on how to check your status, please visit http://www.utexas.edu/ogs/admissions/status.html.
  • Please note that it will take at least 1-2 business days for you to receive access to your MyStatus page after submitting your ApplyTexas application.
  • Please address the following topics in your statement:
    • Why are you interested in global policy studies, and what international or transnational policy challenge do you find most compelling?
    • What kind of career would you like to pursue, and how would attending the LBJ School help you to fulfill your objectives (think in terms of a ten year timeline)?
    • What meaningful international experiences have you had so far, and how did they shape your outlook about international affairs and your career?

Prerequisites

These are prerequisites to enroll in the program, but you may apply to our program before you have fulfilled the requirements.

  • One semester of college level statistics. If you haven't yet taken statistics, your requirement can be fulfilled by:
    • AP test credit listed on your college transcript or
    • Completion of an equivalent class at a community college or
    • Successful completion of an LBJ course that we offer to admitted students the summer before you start the program or
    • Passing a validation exam during orientation
  • Four semesters at the college level in one foreign language, or equivalent (e.g., Peace Corps or military foreign language training). 
    • Placement tests are available at UT Austin to meet the requirement. 
    • International students whose native language is not English are considered to have satisfied this requirement.
  • While not required, it is recommended that entering students have six hours of undergraduate economics, and a course each in calculus and international relations.
