Students choosing this survey class co-taught by national leaders in bioethics (Prof. Robertson) and health policy (Prof. Sage) will take an interdisciplinary, clinical approach to the law of health care delivery, health insurance financing, and bioethics. Following an overview and introduction, the course will cover five units addressing critically important aspects of the health care system: access to basic medical care, quality and efficiency in surgical care, behavioral health and long-term care for neuropsychiatric disease, prevention and treatment of cancer, and reproductive and perinatal health. Each unit will begin with an overview of the biomedical context presented by faculty from UT’s new Dell Medical School, followed by several classes exploring related legal issues. In addition to presenting essential material for those intending to represent health care providers and payers, serve as health care regulators and policymakers, or advocate on behalf of individuals, the course offers students of all backgrounds an immersion in the challenges of human health and disease, and an understanding of the legal governance of one-sixth of the U.S. economy.
