The teaching case study is an invaluable instructional tool that engages students in active analysis and use of strategy related to core management issues. Case studies describe an organization and a critical management or policy, and instructors then guide students to formulate and compare strategy in response to the issue at hand. In this course students will expand the library of civil society case studies by working in teams to interview selected nonprofit organizations and produce informative case studies which illustrate typical dilemmas and challenges. These themes will be addressed:

1. Governance and Leadership
2. Performance Measurement and Evaluation
3. Financing and Revenue Strategies
4. Communication and Media Relations
5. Managing Public and Nonprofit Relationships
6. Managing Accountability and Building Legitimacy
7. Community Partners and Civic Engagement

The course is part of a trilateral collaboration between Canada, the United States and Mexico, titled “Developing Civil Society Education through Case Studies” program (DCSCS). Through this partnership, three universities are presenting courses in which students research and write case studies. Instructors are working closely with the University of Washington’s Electronic Hallway (www.hallway.org), which is an online resource of case studies on public affairs issues and a resource on the teaching and writing of teaching case studies related to public policy and nonprofit endeavors. The objectives of this course are for students to increase their familiarity with management issues in civil society organizations; to develop skills in describing and analyzing nonprofit management issues. Students will work individually and in teams to prepare short scenarios and case studies that are of strong analytic and descriptive quality and provide useful information and learning opportunities for practitioners. Students in this class will simultaneously enroll in a graduate class on nonprofit strategy, and can use their learning to inform their case study development.
